The SPPU, then University of Poona had granted recognition to the ICMR-NIV (formerly Virus Research Centre, VRC) vide UoP letter dated 16-08-1971 w.e.f. 02-08-1971 in the subjects viz. Zoology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. Since then the recognition is renewed every 5 years. Currently, SPPU has granted recognition for M Phil/PhD program for the following subjects; M Phil (Biotechnology and Basic Medical Science) and PhD (Biotechnology, Basic Medical Science, Microbiology, Zoology and Biochemistry). Presently 16 scientists have been recognized as M Phil/PhD guides/teachers for 1 or more of above mentioned subjects by the SPPU (list shown in Table below). Aspirants with ICMR-JRF, CSIR-NET, UGC-NET, DBT-JRF, DST-Inspire fellowships are eligible to enroll for the PhD program at ICMR-NIV through the SPPU. Regular staff (scientific and technical) are eligible to enroll for PhD after passing PhD Entrance Test (PET) conducted by the SPPU. The PhD course work for different subjects is conducted at the SPPU, and National Center for Cell Science, Pune.
