ICMR-NIV Bangalore unit

NIV Bangalore, unit was established in Bangalore in April 1970. The main emphasis was on investigation and laboratory diagnosis of arbo viruses. The field station was formed in 1975 by merging of three units namely Virus Research Centre Bangalore, Virus Research Centre Sagar and arbovirus laboratory at Vellore. The field station was identified as national laboratory for WHO Polio, Measles and Rubella projects in SEARO region.

Significant contributions

  • First laboratory in the state to start testing SARS CoV-2 PCR test and confirm first laboratory case.
  • As a ICMR regional depot for Karnataka state supply COVID-19 PCR kits to state and central laboratories in the state
  • As a COVID-19 PCR quality assessment laboratory we do regular quality checking for testing laboratories in the state.
  • National Laboratory for Polio virus, Measles and Rubella virus serology and molecular testing under WHO SEARO network.
  • Insect specific virus Phasi Charoen-Like Phasiviruswas identified from Mosquitoes, this is first of kind in our country.
  • Dengue virus in Bangalore City, 1970 by Virus Isolation & Serology.
  • First Japanese Encephalitis Epidemic in 1975 in Karnataka.
  • First Dengue Fever outbreaks in Karnataka Villages 1993.
  • First DHF/DSS cases in Karnataka 1993.
  • Diagnosed Chikungunya Epidemic in India 2005-06, First CHIK virus isolation and identification.
  • First Rubella Virus Isolated and Identified in SEARO region.
  • Identification of Batai and Ingwavuma virus in the state.
  • About sixty publication from our in peer review journals.

The Field Station has undertaken the studies on following aspects and the study findings were published in various national and international journals.

WHO-SEARO Surveillance projects

  • >National Polio Laboratory for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) includes Virus Isolation and Molecular Testing.
  • >National Measles/Rubella Laboratory for Measles Rubella Surveillance includes Serology and Molecular testing.

Infrastructure (Labs)

Infrastructure (Labs)

  • The field station is equipped with the state –of-the-art facility such as Nanopore DNA sequencer, real time PCR, Gel documentation system, Biosafety cabinets to handle P2 level organisms, Microbiological Shakers, Millipore water system, tissue homogeniser, UV Microscope, Ultra low temperature cabinets (-80o C) and Deep freezer (-20o C), automated ELISA washer and reader etc., for conducting cutting edge research on surveillance and control of vector borne diseases in the country. The field station has been establishing facility for undertaking research on nanotechnology based control of vector borne diseases.
